MFI Mermaid

Learn to move like a mermaid, then to perform like one. MFI, Mermaid Federation International, was built for mermaiding as an art: moving beautifully underwater, holding a pose, and telling a story with a routine. Aliyah, an MFI Mermaid Instructor, teaches it in three steps, from your first time in a tail to a show of your own. Lessons are mostly one-to-one, at a safe depth for the pool, and never in the water alone.

Do I need a course?

Effortless is the art of it.

In a tail your legs are joined, your kick comes from your core, and turning upright takes practice. Add a held breath, and there is a lot to learn: how your body behaves underwater, how to use the tail, fin and mask, and above all how to stay safe.

A course teaches all of it in the right order, safety first. Most beginners find it a happy challenge, and pick it up faster than they expect.

Why MFI?

Trained as performers.

Mermaid Federation International trains mermaids as performers. Its courses go beyond swimming in a tail to posing, choreography and showmanship, and its advanced certifications test rescue skills and theory as well as performance.

It also stays with its mermaids after they qualify, with a community that performs at events across Asia. And because Aliyah sits on MFI's Technical Committee, you learn MFI's programme from someone who helps shape it.

Course by course

What you will learn.

M

Basic Mermaid

The gentlest way in, for absolute beginners. A short theory session covers the tail, the fin and how to stay safe, then the pool session is all yours: putting on the tail, swimming with your legs together in water where you can stand, and the classic mermaid poses for photos. The tail, fin and mask are lent to you; bring your own swimsuit.

M1

Advanced Mermaid

Where you become a performing mermaid. Over five sessions you build the skills underneath a performance: static poses, smooth transitions, and dynamic routines underwater, with breath-hold and safety training alongside. A land session teaches the choreography before you take it into the water. To earn the MFI certificate you perform two routines, show your mermaid swimming, and complete a rescue tow and a short written test. Under 18s need a parent's consent.

M2

Master Mermaid

For M1 mermaids ready to perform. You create and polish two full underwater choreographies, set to music, with the focus on showmanship: how you enter, hold the audience, and finish. MFI regards M2 graduates as professional underwater performers, so it is where a hobby can become a role at events. Open to adults with the M1 certificate.

What comes after

MFI's ladder continues with Producer (M3) and specialties such as Ocean Mermaid and Guardian of Mermaid Safety. These are not offered at The Dancing Mermaid yet.
