PADI Mermaid

Swim like a mermaid, one step at a time. Aliyah is a PADI Mermaid Instructor (PADI No. 524890) and teaches PADI's mermaid path in four steps, from a first splash in the shallow end to basic mermaid freediving. Lessons are mostly one-to-one, in a pool in Singapore.

PADI's eLearning is included in every fee. 1 An adult must be at the pool for children under 16, and anyone under 18 needs a parent's consent. Most lessons are one-to-one, and friends can book a class together, never more than four. Every course is at a pool in Singapore; we share the location once you have booked.

Do I need a course?

Effortless is the art of it.

In a tail your legs are joined, your kick comes from your core, and turning upright takes practice. Add a held breath, and there is a lot to learn: how your body behaves underwater, how to use the tail, fin and mask, and above all how to stay safe.

A course teaches all of it in the right order, safety first. Most beginners find it a happy challenge, and pick it up faster than they expect.

Why PADI?

Recognised wherever you swim.

PADI is the world's best-known diver training organisation, and its mermaid certifications are recognised wherever PADI is. Its courses are performance-based: you move on once you have mastered a skill, not when the clock runs out.

PADI's eLearning, included in every fee, covers the theory at home, so your time in the pool goes on swimming.

Course by course

What you will learn.

Discover Mermaid

Your first time in a tail, with your feet never far from the floor. In an hour in the shallow end you learn how to put a tail on and take it off safely, how to move with your legs together, and how to rest and stand up whenever you want. It is the easiest way to find out whether mermaiding is for you, and a happy hour for a child who has dreamed of it. No swimming test and no experience needed. Discover Mermaid is an experience rather than a certification; Basic Mermaid is the first certification.

Basic Mermaid

Twice the time, and your first PADI mermaid course. You start with a knowledge session on the gear, your body in the water and staying safe, then move into the pool, to a depth of 3 m. There you learn the fundamentals PADI builds everything on: mermaid swimming and breath-holding, done calmly and safely, with Aliyah beside you. Suits confident swimmers aged 6 and up who want more than a taster.

Mermaid

The full course, over four sessions of an hour and a half. It takes in everything from Basic Mermaid, then adds the more dynamic, expressive skills that set mermaiding apart from ordinary swimming and diving, down to 5 m. Each session builds on the last. Suits swimmers aged 10 and up who want to swim like a mermaid rather than just wear the tail.

Advanced Mermaid

For certified PADI Mermaids ready to go deeper. Over two to three days you build on everything from the Mermaid course and learn basic mermaid freediving techniques, to a depth of 10 m. It is the course that prepares you to explore the water like a mermaid.

Questions

Asked before every first lesson.

Most lessons are one student and one instructor, which is how Aliyah prefers to teach: her attention stays on you, and the lesson moves at your pace. Friends can book a class together, never more than four, each at the usual course fee.

Yes. Discover Mermaid (PADI) and Basic Mermaid M (MFI) need no swimming test and stay in water where you can stand. The other courses ask for a short swim first, listed on each course.

From age 6 for most courses; each course lists its minimum age. An adult must be at the pool for children under 16, and anyone under 18 needs a parent's consent.

Start from what you want. To pose, perform and move beautifully in a tail, look at MFI Mermaid. To dance to music without a tail, Underwater Dance. To build water skills step by step, towards basic freediving in a tail, PADI Mermaid. Both mermaid paths lead to a recognised certification. Not sure? Ask us.

A swimsuit and a towel. Everything else for the lesson is lent to you.

At a pool in Singapore. We share the location with you once you have booked.

No. A tail, fin and mask are lent to you for every lesson.

PADI's online lessons, done at home before your pool sessions, so pool time goes on swimming. It is included in the fee.

From Basic Mermaid upwards, yes: a PADI certification, recognised by PADI centres worldwide. Discover Mermaid is an experience, without a certification.

Advanced Mermaid teaches the skills underneath it, including basic mermaid freediving, but our courses are all in a pool. Open water adds waves, currents, cold and poor visibility, so take a tail there only with a trained buddy watching, in calm conditions, and never alone. Our guide Pool or open water? explains more.
